The Power of Affirmations

I have been saying affirmations with a buddy every week day morning for the last 2 weeks and the results are impressive. I feel better about myself, my life, and the world around me. Even though my affirmations are basic and work related, I still see such a tremendous difference in my attitude. The power of positive thinking is staggering! My next action item is to create a list of affirmations to recite in the shower.

Here are the ones I say on a daily basis.

Today is a great day!
I am the best at what I do.
Everyone I talk to wants to work with me.
Opportunity easily flows in my direction.

Create a list of 3 to 4 positive statements and repeat them each 3 to 5 times every day out loud. It is easy to do this in the shower, driving, or as you are getting ready in the morning. It is doesn’t matter what you say as long as it is positive and reinforces something you want to achieve.

Another really great resource I consult on a a daily basis is a book called Answers in the Heart. It is a collection of daily meditations.

Here are a few others that may be more appropriate for the struggling addict.

I am a good person and love myself.
I am finding meaning, purpose, and fulfillment in my life.
As I relax and let go, I flow towards my greatest good.
In turning away my old habits, I see the amazing possibilities of a new life to be lived.

It’s a good life. We must slow down and smell the flowers and savor each day.

A Good Day, Every Day

I am interested in how other people judge whether or not their day was a good one. I have developed the following guidelines to call my day a success and feel good about myself.

Don’t act out with pornography.
Journal.
Drink 48 ounces of water.
30 minutes of exercise.

If we are painstaking about this phase of our development, we will be amazed before we are half way through.
We are going to know a new freedom and a new happiness.
We will not regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it.
We will comprehend the word serenity and we will know peace.
No matter how far down the scale we have gone, we will see how our experience can benefit others.
That feeling of uselessness and self-pity will disappear.
We will lose interest in selfish things and gain interest in our fellows.
Self-seeking will slip away.
Our whole attitude and outlook upon life will change.
Fear of people and of economic insecurity will leave us.
We will intuitively know how to handle situations which used to baffle us.
We will suddenly realize that God is doing for us what we could not do for ourselves.
Are these extravagant promises? We think not.
They are being fulfilled among us – sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly. They will always materialize if we work for them.

I have spent the last couple hours reviewing other sex and porn addiction blogs on the web and I am encouraged by the strength, hope and honesty I have read. There are many courageous people out there sharing their stories. Thank you.

The Addict Doing Pushups

I must never underestimate the addict. The addict will always be there and is a part of who I am. I may be working on my recovery on a daily basis, however the addict is in the backyard doing push ups preparing for the next opportunity to catch me off guard and kick my ass. Am I ready?

To Catch A Predator?

Enough Already, Chris Hansen, Perverted Justice and “To Catch A Predator.” Stop with the entrapment and start offering help. Sex addiction is a powerful beast and this television show exploits the poor souls who do not know where to find help for their problem. I have yet to watch an episode that offered advice for viewers who felt compelled to interact sexually with minors. It is a taboo topic. Does this show want to stop the exploitation of children or just get ratings? Chris Hansen has written on his blog that many of the men arrested on the TV show have seen his program, so why not offer help instead of jail bait? My main point is that sexual addiction is powerful, cunning and baffling and until society recognizes it to be just as powerful as drug addiction or alcoholism we are going to continually have an abundance of problems in our communities. Let’s be part of the solution instead of part of the problem.

You Might Be A Internet Porn Addict If…

1) You scrub your hard drive after every porn downloading binge with an industrial strength file shredder to be safe in the event your computer is confiscated.

2) You use an internet browser that automatically clears private data upon exit.

3) You have a different computer for family and friends to use when they are visiting.

4) You understand proxy servers and anonymizer products.

5) You realize when you get a new computer it is better to sledge hammer or incinerate the old computer than sell it or recycle it.

6) You feel ashamed you do all the items above.

A Test of Willingness

This is my first step at public accountability. I have tried the rest with no avail. Counseling, therapy, groups, meetings, and prayer. I have yet to feel completely anonymous and safe to share my story. This is my opportunity. We will climb the mountain of pornography addiction together.
